Baseball Hall of Fame: Cooperstown NY

Football Hall of Fame: Canton OH

You put the Hall of Fame where it makes logical sense–where the history actually exists. Not in some random “cultural epicenter.”

Not to mention that Cooperstown is beautiful. Been there more than a few times. Major cities, while impressive, don’t tend to have gorgeous nature.

I’ve been to Canton and trust me, they have no problem packing people in for the Hall of Fame weekend. Dedicated fans have no trouble traveling to visit the hall of fame for their favorite hobby or passion. The only mainstream hall of fame in a big city is the Rock in Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland.

The Basketball hall of fame is in Springfield, Mass, where James Naismith invented Basketball.

The Little League Hall of Fame is in Williamsport, PA where Little League started.

Abner Doubleday who created baseball lived in Cooperstown NY

Sorry Edie, you are totally wrong on this one.

Well, let me join Edie in heretical dissent - or at least a qualified sort. I would concede the historical link of Radar’s home town, but I’d prefer to treat this like the Olympics and hear some competing bids. I mean, there are probably other locales with a reasonable videogame historical claim?

Oh, and Tim, you really had your Old Skool Crankiness hat on, but it does suit you. You are also VERY right on Tie Fighter (which I liked better than XW v TF!). Admiral Thrawn rawks! (and the Empire’s hardware is just cooler anyway)

The Empire’s Hardware is way cooler? Its mass produced and crap (for TIE’s anyway). TIE’s are made to be both disposable from the hardware and pilot standpoint. They have NO shields, no Hyperdrive, and massive firepower. Basically they are a Kamakazie vehicle. Plus, they have no ability to see to the left or right. Seinar’s design is HORRIBLE. Now, the TIE/D Defender model was a bit more acceptable, but really? The Emprire may h ve had cool leadership, but their spacecraft were crap.

Wow. You know you’re really hitting the heavy geek underbrush when *I* have to Google for something. ;-)

Seinar? Really?

My Star Wars geekdom is pretty heavy. I would tell you how many Star Wars expanded universe novels I have read, but then it would appear even worse.

(Technically its Seinar Fleet Systems, they did the TIE line and a lot of other starfighters, shuttles, and some Capital ships. Not the Star Destroyers however, those were produced by Kuat Drive Yards )

I think there are tons of systems that should be in the Hall of Fame Xbox 360 being one of them. Microsoft has really done alot of groundbreaking with the 360.

@Hoshneer = Um, no.

To borrow something Blogkitten said earlier:
“They should do it just like the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame does; 25 years after the act debuted. So they can prove their cultural significance. Or like baseball does; only 5 years AFTER retirement can a player be ELECTED to be included in the hall of fame. That is how they should do it.”

I’m not saying we should wait that long, lets say 15 years, but there should be a waiting period. And a voting process, either by a committee or the public. You say the 360 deserves it because of groundbreaking work? I’ll assume you mean XBox Live. I would say it’s because EVERY FUCKING CONSOLE THEY SELL BREAKS! Don’t get me wrong, I love my 360, but it’s only 4 years old. It’s in no way a classic. It’s great, but not classic. Just like cars; I LOVE the 2010 M3, but that doesn’t mean it’s a classic like a 67 Mustang is.

15 years, then a vote. That’s how it should be. There’s a reason shit groups like Fallout Boy will NEVER be in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame; because nobody will know who the hell they are in 25 years. Popular now does not equal popular forever.

Tim is right. There needs to be a period for historical reflection.

They also need a Hall of Shame wing for shit like the Virtual Boy.

A videogame HOF is a tough thing. You know Pac Man gets in, but what about Ms. Pac Man? Do you take Robotron or Smash TV? Centipede or Millipede?

I mean, is Space Invaders great? Or is it just the best that we had at the time?

When I said, cooler, I was primarily referring to the aesthetics of the design - uniforms, capital ships, small ships, hell even the Stormtrooper armor has a look to it that I like. As far as fighters go, I actually tended to prefer the Tie Advanced. Love the firepower + shields and in a nicely compact design. Tie Defender looked a little too busy for me.

Besides, the Empire has the uber-cool hardware - a Death Star that DESTROYS PLANETS! Do the rebels have anything even remotely close? No. Pfft! Empire wins.

You mean a Death Star that could not afford a grate to cover its thermal exhaust port and let a hick from a sand ball planet who had never even been off world blow the shit out of it?

Avatar

HeartbreakRidge

May 10th, 2009 at 4:59 pm

So the Empire isn’t careful with its toys? True. It still DESTROYS PLANETS.

Besides, a lack of a freaking cover for an exhaust port is the least of its flaws. How about something as basic as ANTI-FIGHTER DEFENSES??

Anyway, the Death Star is still cool, unless you are a nit-picking engineer, or something.

The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant to the power of the force.

I mean come on, I can goose a chick from across the room with that stuff.

Guys, seriously, the Death Star defenses were meant to repel a full-scale assault from large capital ships; NOT stunt fighters.

And Luke said it himself; it’s just like bullseyeing womprats back home. ;-)
