If you noticed already, there’s a new byline that appeared: Leah “WhiteGodiva” Haydu. You may know the name as one half of Some Other Castle and you’ve probably heard her on the site’s website, Some Other Podcast. She’s also been a guest on GameHounds and Edie Sellers’ other show, Estrocast, with Mrs. Lefty Brown.
We are excited to have Leah writing for us, and we’d love to introduce her to you now. – ed.
I’m Leah Haydu, AKA WhiteGodiva, AKA “that drunk chick over there with her pants on her head.” I have many faces, okay? The face I’m wearing right now, though, is my gamer face. It is a very serious face.
My first gaming system was the original GameBoy — the big, gray brick. If I had back the money I had spent on AA batteries for that thing, I could probably put a nice down payment on a house right about now, because it went everywhere with me. My parents still don’t really understand the whole gaming thing, and back then they were even more suspicious; I suspect what finally made them break down and put that beautiful contraption into my grubby little 8-year-old hands was that we lived eight hours away from my grandparents and made the trip several times a year, for holidays and such. Gaming was a way to shut me up for large chunks of time. It still works.
After that, I eventually wore them down enough to procure a Sega Genesis, and things went their course from there, through the first console I bought with my own money (the N64, my first year of college) on to the three years I spent working for *ahem* a major gaming retailer, and all the way to today, when there are three systems hooked up to a brand new HDTV to my left and two handhelds plugged into their respective chargers to my right. And here I am in the middle, writing about it all. Fitting, no?
You should know that I’m a compulsive game-buyer, but I’m not a game-finisher, really. This isn’t because I tend to quit or just don’t play very often — quite the opposite. It’s because I’m one of those weird JRPG kids who can pump 60 to 80 hours into a game featuring angsty, spiky-haired, androgynous teenagers and not give it a second thought. What this practically means is that I get a lot for my money, but my completion rate is a little low, and my backlog, well, it’s pretty high. I’ve been branching out in more recent years, including more adventure games and even shooters in my rotation, so that’s changing bit by bit, but JRPGs will always be my first love. My favorites are the Final Fantasy series (of course) and anything with Shin Megami Tensei in the title, but I’ll play just about anything, the weirder the better.
I’m a writer by trade, so I hope you enjoy my stuff. I actually have a Master’s degree in 17th Century and Renaissance literature (I know how exciting that sounds, believe me), but I don’t get to put the whole composition thing to use nearly as much as I’d like; I’ve been podcasting and writing for Some Other Castle for about two years, and I’m really looking forward to showing the GameHounds community what I’m bringing with me!
