27 Aug 2011Rise of Nightmares is a Kinect survival-horror game by Sega. No controller is used at all, at any point. It’s an interesting idea, and so far Sega seems to be pulling it off remarkably well.
It has a very Hostel vibe to it: You play as Josh, an American riding a train through Europe with his wife Kate. The story begins when she’s about to reveal something to you. Josh leans in close, and a bottle falls from his pocket. He was a recovering alcoholic, but he’s not recovering anymore. Kate gets up and walks to another part of the train in anger. Josh goes back to his train car, and here the game lets you get used to the movement controls and interacting with doors and objects.
Then all hell breaks loose.

26 Aug 2011The huge signs and posters, the non-disclosure agreement on the iPad I signed while waiting in line, the very strict control of who sees what and where — it’s all a part of the PAX experience for big title games. Mass Effect 3 is now partially playable and if you enjoyed the second game in the series, you’re in for a surprise with the third.

26 Aug 2011You wake up drunk and everything has already gone to hell. This is how Dead Island begins, both the demo at PAX and the final game itself.
Sadly, the intro doesn’t change depending on which character you start as, but that doesn’t mean they’re indistinguishable from each other. The demo forces me to play as Xian Mei, a very commanding woman, a natural leader, and her skill sets reflect that trait: A lot of her unlockable abilities focus on team buffs, and she takes care of people. Oh, and she’s good with knives, which is very important since Dead Island is a melee-focused game. Guns are rare, proven by the fact that your very first weapon is a boat’s oar.

26 Aug 2011Before the demo starts, Steve Gibson of Gearbox reassures all of us in the room that Borderlands 2 isn’t just a quick, cash-in sequel; and the fact that it’s not coming out until “fiscal year 2013” certainly supports that claim. After watching the demo, I’m fully convinced: Gearbox is keeping what works while changing what’s familiar, adding more, all the while never breaking the unique character Borderlands is known for.

26 Aug 2011For those of us who have played the Battlefield franchise over the years, we have certain expectations of each new game that is released. Ever since Battlefield 1941 I’ve craved to play online with friends and huge groups of people. I even went so far as to create a LAN party with ethernet cables running outside barracks rooms and under doors so everyone in my dorm could play, even without a “real” internet connection. Coming to PAX this year, my expectations were exceptionally high for Battlefield 3. Little did I know of the experience I was about to have. Read the rest of this entry »

25 Aug 2011Alex Mercer just won’t die. At least that’s what I took away from an introductory video shown before a demo of Prototype 2 at a pre-PAX Activision event. In the video, the military group Blackwatch explains its with Mercer, basically that it thought him dead twice and wa proven wrong both times. So perhaps it’s a good thing it doesn’t have to worry about him in Prototype 2, at least not in the parts of the game that were shown. Instead it has to deal with James Heller, a man whose family was killed in the initial virus outbreak and now wants revenge. And, of course, he’s got all the same powers as Mercer did. While it’s still a good many months away (releasing in April 2012), it’s already clear that this sequel doesn’t seek to reinvent the franchise but iterate on it in all the right ways.

26 Jul 2011Hey, we got a full house this week.
After a week with only two of three hosts, it’s nice to have everyone back in their assigned seats and ready for some book-learnin’.
Nick Dinicola, Holy Goalie and Edie Sellers are thwarted slightly by the lack of gaming news, so this show has that lazy summer feel. They do end up finding a suprising amount to chat up, though, including:
Enjoy.
